ESP MAX for WalkmanI FINALLY found out what ESP MAX for Walkman means! (And does!) ESP stands Electronic Skip Protection. It just makes scratched CD’s have less of that ‘skip’ in the songs. (Like when it skips from one place to another). One customer said that it was completely useless, since it was hard to make those CD’s skip anyways with the Walkman. Now, I imagine that Sony is stuck. Stuck on whether that was just a serious insult, on the ESP, or a big compliment on the Walkman! J Apparently, it also has four playback modes. You can hear one track over and over again, hear the tracks in random (shuffle), hear it repeatedly and randomize it?!? and shuffle it, and hear it many times?!? I haven’t gotten the hang of it yet. *Sheepish smile* I never pay attention to instructions manuals… You can also ‘rewind’ and skip ahead on the Walkman! (I found that out only a while ago…*coughs*) The Walkman can do quite a lot of things, considering it has so little buttons. Maybe I underestimated technology, as well as instructions booklets… As I also found out only a little while ago, if you press the sound button, it puts the bass, and the double bass on. If you are listening to pop, or and music that involves singing, I suggest that you put the double bass on. It’s amazing what it can do! Although if you are listening to classical music, especially piano music, you should get back to normal, as it kind of fogs up the ‘pure’ sound from a piano. (Although the instructions thingy, which I threw away, could have told me that…J) It is a great machine, overall.

RELIABLE |
I bought this player a while ago, and it was not bad value for money back then. It has all you need, all of the basic functions etc. It has never had any problems, so therefore i can safely say that, for me this is the perfect portable cd player. Sony is rightfully well trusted, however the esp shock protection is not really needed: i have knocked the player off a table, and it just kept on playing (without esp on). The most important things for me are play time on 2 batteries and sound quality, and this player fulfils these requirements beautifully. The only problem i have is that this, (and all) portable cd player is big, and this led to my purchase of the MZN707 minidisc player. Since then i have never looked back.Still, if its a cd player you want, then this is the perfect choice for you. I hope this was of help.

no complaints |
I literally have no complaints after a year of use, and finding fault is one of my talents. The price was low, so I did not expect much. However, I was very surprised. I soon discovered that the ESP feature is nearly useless, as one must try very hard indeed to make the player skip even with ESP disabled. With a pair of 1600 mAh NiMH batteries, I can go for more than a week with several hours of daily use. In fact, I think that the batteries self discharge faster than I can use them up. I often forget to keep another pair charged, because they are needed so infrequently. Once the included headphones have fallen apart (Ive never seen a pair included with anything that didnt) and been replaced, one finds that the sound is excellent, especially the bass. I suspect one would have to use a pair of those big raver-phones to be able to distinguish the sound from that of a much more expensive player. While the player does not look very durable, I have fallen on mine multiple times with no ill effects. The only visible damage mine has are the tiny scratches and worn buttons that accumulate from constant use. I have great respect for the player and the people that designed it. Instead of doing everything, it sticks to the basics and does them with a level of excellence I dont think I have ever seen before. That is very difficult to find these days.
